Duke Memorial UMC invites all to a reception on Friday, April 24, 7-9 pm, celebrating the opening of the art exhibition “Call Me Mara: A Redemptive Journey toward Environmental Justice.” The exhibition will feature artworks that address grief and lament in how consumption, pollution, and destruction impact the environment; hope for the beauty of nature to be respected and protected; and redemption for all creation; and questions of faith as they relate to environmental justice.
The title of the show is inspired by the narrative of Naomi in the Bible, and the grief-filled moment when Naomi says, “call me Mara,” because Mara means bitterness. At the end of the book of Ruth, Naomi reclaims her original name, reflecting themes of beauty and hope.
