When we eat, it is often to satisfy hunger, but what if it can be seen as more – much more – of a life choice? What if we see eating in a way that is beyond nutrition? What if it’s not only about the food? What if how we eat contributes to flourishing, that quality of life that is elusive for so many today?
As people created for community, how we eat, in addition to what we eat, can affect our mental and emotional health. At the Convocation on the Rural Church recently, Dr. Chris Adams reviewed the results of the Clergy Health Initiative and the body of research it has created. Clergy report a clear sense of call and purpose, and thus, most are thriving in their ministry. Even so, many indicate that they feel anxious, isolated and they reflect the dis-ease of the congregations they serve. Seasons of depression and frustration, and awareness of the effects on their families, cause some to languish in their ministry and relationships.
Life Around the Table is sponsoring a retreat, EATING TOGETHER, on September 23-24 at Camp Chestnut Ridge. The food will be phenomenal, but even better, the experience will open participants to the hope of wholeness, flourishing. At the table, participants will break bread with people, lay and clergy, of other communities and other denominations. Socially, this addresses our need for people who accept us as we are, not as we perform in the role of a pastor. Opportunities will be given to engage in activities not typically associated with the mental and emotional work of ministry, like gardening and practicing skills required in meal preparation. The risk of trying something new, and failing to master the required skill, is met with laughter and not evaluation by a committee.
Ultimately, Life Around the Table is introducing a curriculum that focuses on the interconnectedness of systems that sustain us physically and spiritually. This is not for Foodies only, but for anyone who seeks to know God and to know the joy of God’s generosity and grace.
